On January 19th, WICT New England held their 2017 Mentoring Program Kick Off Event at the Public House in Sturbridge, MA. This historical and cozy setting set the scene for protégées and mentors to meet, socialize and set goals for the year. A record-high of 35 pairs are participating in the Mentor program this year with 25 pairs attending the daylong event.
WICT New England President, Laura Ausmus, began the day with opening remarks. She reminded everyone that the WICT goal of the year to is to “Educate and Elevate.” Anna Ciccone, WICT New England Mentor Director outlined the yearlong program that includes mentorship at all career levels, power hours for opportunities to connect and tools and resources to guide mentees and mentors. She emphasized that “you will get out as much as you put in,” and that the opportunities for growth are endless.
Shannon Piers, the chapter Health & Wellness Director, led an entertaining and fun icebreaker for the group. It was a great way to get to share stories and get to know others in a casual setting. One of the most enlightening question was “Have you ever been on TV?”
After a delicious buffet lunch, Valerie Gordon led the group in a project called “What is your Story…Storytelling Secrets for your Workplace Success.” Valerie, a 10-time Emmy Award winning producer, helped the pairs outline their character, supporting cast, current chapter, fact check, and plot their next chapter.
It was a great way to define your story…past, present, and future. It gave the mentor groups a chance to share their own stories and learn how to be powerful supporting characters for each other.
Time was taken at the end of the day for the mentor pairs to sit down and discuss their goals and planning. The energy and excitement in the room was infectious. Everyone walked away inspired for the year ahead in addition to some delicious goodies from the Public House bakery.
