EVENT REVIEW

New England’s own Jackie MacMullan joined WICT NE at the annual NECTA Conference this week in Newport RI to give us an insider’s view of what it was like being one of the first female sports journalists to write for the Boston Globe.

They say the Irish are good story tellers, and Jackie proved this to be true as she shared a few of the many highlights of her career working closely with great athletes, like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Ray Bourque, and Tedy Bruschi.

Whether attendees were sports fans or not, Jackie did a fantastic job of drawing us into her stories, and intertwining them with WICT’s touchstones.

She encouraged us all to be ourselves and know where we are going, as she shared how she wrote her first story in 5th grade about the class trip. She got it published on the back page off the local paper, and she was hooked, never wanting to be anything but a journalist after that.

She shared examples of being fearless, as she was one of the first woman entering men’s locker rooms, and having to hold her own.

She told us never allow someone to keep you from doing your job, and she challenged us to always be confident and ask the question, even if we have to ask it twice to get to the answer.

Jackie’s career is a great example of how successful a woman can be when we perform with confidence, integrity and do our best work.
